GETTING IT WRONG
It's easy to wear black incorrectly. The first error most people make is they assume that all black equals easy, on the contrary, when someone wears all black it's the details that have nowhere to hide.
Make sure your black is clean. It's fine if they're wrinkled, but that casualness should only be with the rough materials like denim or linen. Smooth black should always be preferred, like soft wools and cashmeres, but make sure there's some heft to the fabric unless you want to convey romance.
DOING IT RIGHT
What do I mean by "doing it right?" It's in your behavior. Loafing around in black makes the fabric too utilitarian. Make sure you can never be mistaken for an uninitiated raconteur.
Remember that black has origins in formality. I've never been turned away from an event because I was wearing black. If you decide that you wish to wear black, then make sure your shoes are either rugged or elegant, because that will clue others toward your willingness wether or not you wish to attend the party. The color black is an extreme which is why you should peacock a little with the design but once you lose sight of the formality then risk not adhering to the dress code. Moving with elegance helps you look better in black because of it's formality.
THE CRUCIALS
When in doubt, lean classic. If you don't know what that means then peak lapels, flaps are for fun, and try to behave yourself.
Black Chelseas or boots with some edge. Lean smooth rather than corse. Standing upright while wearing black is wonderfully intimidating.
